Born in Honolulu, he was a retired boiler and control room operator for the former Hawaii Electric Light Co., retired history teacher at Hilo High School, former president of the Hilo branch of Hawaii State Teachers Association and member of the Akaka Falls Lions Club and YMI Francis Council # 573.
