The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking candidates for the position of Director to focus on fundraising and outreach events and initiatives in the Netherlands. This full-time position will be based in our Amsterdam office and will report to the Dutch Director of Development and Outreach. We anticipate that the successful candidate will begin this position by February 2023.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating with reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely if local mandates require it. We recognize that this time during the pandemic is a particularly difficult time for most people, especially those with care responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in the recruitment and onboarding of this post.

Responsibilities:

1. Work with the Dutch Director and the development team to identify, screen, cultivate, serve, solicit and manage individual donors and prospects, including committee members, foundations and corporations;

2. Work with the development team to identify, verify, implement and manage new funding sources;

3. Managing and cultivating supporters based in the Netherlands; foundations and individuals;

4. Manage, coordinate and help produce small flagship fundraising, awareness and culture events in the Netherlands, including virtual events, researcher or program briefings and other culture events;

5. Liaise and maintain regular contact with Dutch Committee leadership and the Committee: schedule meetings (in-person or virtual), create agendas, prepare background materials, lead meetings, oversee events and follow up on meetings;

6. Assist the Dutch director in developing fundraising strategies;

7. Assist in the production of events (in-person or virtual) for individuals, foundations and corporations;

8. Manage communications with and create content for the Netherlands Committee and the wider Netherlands donor community, including issuing event invitations, programmatic updates and other relevant outreach activities;

9. Provide support services for the Amsterdam office, including gift tracking and use of HRW’s Salesforce database;

10. Supervise the recruitment and training of interns and coordinate their work;

11. Promote an inclusive and positive work environment, including soliciting diverse viewpoints, encouraging staff to participate in DE&I efforts, and proactively addressing bias, discrimination, microaggressions, etc. . ; and

12. Perform other responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree is required.

Live: A minimum of five years of experience, preferably in fundraising and/or event management, is required.

Related skills and knowledge:

1. An entrepreneurial spirit and the discipline to work independently, but also the ability to function as a member of a development team is highly desirable.

2. Experience coordinating in-person and virtual events, preferably large-scale events, is required.

3. Creativity, initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are required.

4. Excellent oral and written communication skills in Dutch and English are required.

5. Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW, our volunteer groups and committees as well as with local and external partners are required.

6. Ability to multi-task effectively including having good planning and organizational skills and an ability to work under pressure is required.

7. A demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the ability to understand and represent HRW’s mission and programs are essential.

8. Strong technology skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, Salesforce, social media channels and online conferencing platforms (Zoom and Microsoft Teams) are highly desirable.
