New Brewery and BBQ Restaurant in New Orleans, Blocks from the Superdome | Where NOLA eats

A group of regional restaurants famous for beer and a local pitmaster known for his smoking the way of smoking offer a two-pronged concept in downtown New Orleans, very close to Caesars Superdome and the Smoothie King Center.

Brewery Saint X brasserie and restaurant and a counter barbecue area called Devil Moon BBQ is now taking shape in a shared space on the ground floor of the Odeon, a high-rise apartment building on the corner of the avenue Loyola and Girod Street. They will occupy two adjacent and communicating spaces with a common kitchen. The building is part of the South Market District development.

Both are expected to open in late fall.

In the meantime, the upcoming restaurants will host a series of tailgate-style pop-ups for barbecue, canned beer and cocktails before football games this fall. It starts with the LSU season opener at the Superdome this Sunday (Sept. 4), with food and drink from noon to 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot at Loyola Avenue and Julia Street.

Brewery Saint X and Devil Moon BBQ are developed by Neighborhood Restaurant Group, a Washington DC-based hospitality company known for its beer. Bluejacket Brewery/Restaurant and ChurchKey Craft Beer Bar are two of its properties.

Neighborhood Restaurant Group founder Michael Babin is a native of Baton Rouge, and partnerships and events have frequently brought his company to New Orleans, including beer launches at the local craft beer den, the Avenue Pub. .

“We’ve dreamed of doing something in New Orleans for years,” said Greg Engert, beverage director and band partner.

For this first foray into New Orleans, they brought in an accomplished local barbecue professional to run the kitchen.

The pitmaster and chef for both concepts is Shannon Bingham, who was pitmaster for Blue Oak BBQ before opening Emmylou’s, a barbecue counter at St. Roch Market, which now continues as a full-fledged pop-up.

Devil Moon BBQ is billed as a direct barbecue venue with counter service for plates and meat sides. Bingham said he would take inspiration from different regional styles and also emphasize Louisiana traditions around the smoker, especially sausages.

“There are a lot of things we do in Louisiana that are barbecues, but we don’t call them barbecues,” Bingham said.

Brasserie Saint X, meanwhile, will offer a broader menu relying on some of the same smoked meats and dishes that Bingham calls “barbecue adjacent,” as in burgers and wings and such.


Smoked pork chops are on the menu at Emmylou’s barbecue at the Saint-Roch market.

The brewery will have canned beers to go, but the focus is on making beers to drink on site, Engert said.

It will serve 12-14 beers on tap, with classic German and British styles to the fore, and lager brewing, cask ale production and more experimental beers in the range.

The Saint X Brewery will offer a full range of beverages beyond its own beer, including an extensive whiskey list, natural wines and cocktails.

“Whether you want to drink craft beer or not, it should feel like a bar first and foremost,” Engert said.

The brasserie, which will be open to all ages, will seat around 130 people, while the barbecue area, also for all ages, will seat around 45 people.

Saint X’s Brewery and Devil Moon BBQ will serve dinner and lunch, news that might inspire a first sigh of gratitude from those working nearby.
